ROBERTO BAGGIO
Early Years
Roberto Baggio was born in Caldogno, Veneto, the son of Matilde and Florindo Baggio, the sixth of eight siblings. His younger brother, Eddy Baggio, was also a footballer who played 86 matches in Serie B.
Club Career- Juventus from 1990-1995
In July 1990, Baggio joined Juventus Football Club for a then record transfer fee of £12 million. On 1 September of the same year, Baggio made his official debut for Juventus, scoring his first goal in the 39th minute of a 1-5 loss to Napoli in the Supercoppa Italiana final.In the 1990-91 season, Baggio made 33 Serie A appearances for Juventus, scoring 14 goals.
On 2 February 1992, Baggio scored a hat-trick in Juventus‘ 4-1 victory over Foggia in the 19th round of the Serie A. On 26 April, Baggio scored twice in Juventus’ 3-1 victory over Inter Milan in the 30th round of the Serie A. During the 1991-92 season, Baggio made 32 appearances in Serie A for Juventus, scoring 18 goals. On 5 May 1993, Baggio scored twice in Juventus' 3-1 win over Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of the UEFA Cup final, and on 19 May, Juventus won the UEFA Cup final against Borussia Dortmund in the second leg of the UEFA Cup final, 3-0. In the 1992-93 season, Baggio made 43 appearances in all competitions for Juventus, scoring 30 goals and assisting 11 times.
On 31 October 1993, Juventus beat Genoa 4-0 in the 10th round of Serie A. Baggio scored a hat-trick with a reflexed goal, including his 100th Serie A goal in the 77th minute of the match. [In December, Baggio was awarded the 1993 European Ballon d'Or and the FIFA World Footballer of the Year. In the 1993-94 season, Baggio made 41 appearances in all competitions for Juventus, scoring 22 goals.
On 27 November 1994, Baggio suffered a right knee injury during a match against Juventus in Padova, and missed 11 rounds of Serie A afterwards. On 12 March 1995, Baggio played in Juventus' 2-0 win over Foggia in the 23rd round of Serie A and scored a goal in the 63rd minute of the match. In the 1994-95 season, Baggio made 29 appearances for Juventus in all competitions, scoring 14 goals and assisting 11, and also helped Juventus win the Serie A title, the Coppa Italia, and finish second in the European Union Cup.
Club Career- AC Milan from 1995-1997
Although Baggio initially struggled with injuries at the beginning of his first season with Milan, he came back into the starting line-up and was appointed the main penalty taker. He helped Milan win the Serie A title, notably scoring a goal against his former team Fiorentina from a penalty in the title-deciding match. Baggio finished the season with 10 goals in all competitions, in 34 appearances; seven of his goals were scored in Serie A, in 28 appearances, and he also provided 12 assists in Serie A, making him the top assist provider of the season.
Baggio made his UEFA Champions League debut in the 1996–97 season, scoring his first goal in the competition, although Milan were eliminated in the group stage. Milan also lost the 1996 Supercoppa Italiana to Fiorentina, as Baggio was left on the bench. During his time at Milan, Baggio scored 19 goals in 67 appearances in all competitions; 12 of his goals were scored in Serie A, in 51 appearances, 3 were scored in the Coppa Italia in 6 appearances, and 4 were scored in European competitions, in 10 appearances.
